Cellum trials object-recognition function for mobile purchases

September 3, 2013

Seeking to take greater advantage of smartphone technology, Cellum Global Corp., a provider of mobile payment solutions, is working on a new solution that may include software capable of visually recognizing items chosen for purchase.

The experimental project launched in December, the Hungarian firm said in a news release, and is co-financed by the European Union. The solution requires no QR code or barcode scanning, the company said, and may include a system that is capable of object recognition, integrating loyalty programs and carrying out customer-specific analyses of purchase data.

"This latter function for data mining can open up incredible new horizons for personalized marketing," Balázs Inotay, Cellum's director of strategy, said in the release. "Though there is still a long road ahead, our aim is clearly to take full advantage of the possibilities offered by smartphones."
