Unless a saviour steps up to reverse direction the Christmas Tree Shops retail chain is heading to store liquidation.

The discount retailer is closing all its 70 stores in the next few weeks, according to a CNN report. The shuttering follows a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in May by the 53-year-old retailer.

The discount retail chain, which sold a variety of home goods, disclosed in a court filing last week that it defaulted on a $45 million loan and is closing its roughly 70 stores in the coming weeks.

It's the latest in a string of retail chains facing financial challenges. The list includes Bed Bath & Beyond as well as household retailer Tuesday Morning.
