Could Pinterest reverse the effects of showrooming?

August 1, 2013

Recent data distributed by Vision Critical suggests that the social media site Pinterest may serve as a reverse showrooming tool for retailers. According to a post on Business Insider, research shows that 21 percent of Pinterest users had bought an item in a store after pinning, repinning, or liking the item on the site.

Vision Critical describes reverse showrooming as when consumers search or browse products online and then enter the brick-and-mortar shop to make the final purchase.

The data also showed that 50 percent of the items caught users' attention while they were casually browsing Pinterest itself, with 24 percent of that on a stranger's board, 19 percent from a friend's board and 7 percent on a retailer's. Another 10 percent came from Pinterest searches, according to the article.
