eBay drops American Express credit card acceptance

eBay will no longer accept American Express credit cards citing the swipe fees charged to merchants.
The move, according to a press release from the Merchants Payments Coalition, is a "symptom of the underlying problem" impacting retailers.
The group acknowledged that while eBay, being a huge online retailer, can make such a move most smaller retailers don't have the option.
EBay shared the Amex decision with its customers last week and said it will stop accepting the card as of August 17, citing "unacceptable high fees" related to processing card transaction.
The Merchants Payments Coalition represents retailers, supermarkets, convenience stores, gasoline stations, online merchants and others advocating for a more competitive and transparent card system.
