Etsy CEO: It's all about gross merchandise sales

Etsy, an online spot for selling handmade and antique crafts and items, is mainly focused on one financial point: gross merchandise sales.

A Fortune report noted that the e-commerce marketplace is prepping for an IPO effort, and one reason may be is the company's 15 percent boost in merchandise sales in the fourth quarter.

Etsy had been tracking over a dozen different business metrics, CEO Josh Silverman said in the article, and realized it needed to pare down the list, streamline operations and refocus.
