Facial recognition kiosks at Canadian malls draw privacy complaints

August 10, 2018

Kiosks with facial recognition cameras have raised objections at Calgary, Canada, shopping centers after a picture of one of the kiosks was posted on Reddit, according to CTVNews.ca

Shoppers interviewed by CTV Calgary said that consumers should be made aware that the kiosk would be recording their faces.

Representatives from Cadillac Fairview, the parent company of Chinook Centre, released a statement saying that the cameras were placed in the mall's digital directories in order to help the company understand use patterns and create a better shopper experience. They said that the cameras do not record or store video content.

A spokesperson for Alberta's Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner said that no complaints had been filed about the cameras, but that consumers could submit complaints to that office.
