In North Texas, future deliveries from FedEx Office may not only be off a truck but from a robot as the delivery service plans to have "same-day bots" in play come July.
The initial rollout will be a test period and will involve FedEx routes in Plano and Frisco, according to a Dallas News report, and testing will also take place at FedEx headquarters in Memphis as well as Manchester, New Hampshire. And it won't just be packages that robots will be dropping off. Deliveries can range from a local pizza order to groceries and pharmacy drugs, according to the report.
FedEx Office is essentially the former Kinkos enterprise and has 1,900 U.S. locations, noted the report.
The bots feature six wheels and a box and can carry up to 100 pounds. They can climb stairs and roll through sand, snow or gravel, according to the report. When it arrives at a customer's destination, the consumer unlocks the bot box using an app and a special code.
