Edeka Handelsgesellschaft Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thueringen mbH, a German food retailer, selected Pyramid Computer to develop a customized self-checkout kiosk that is space-saving, service-friendly and has a unique design, according to a press release.

Edeka wanted a self-checkout solution that offered flexibility to meet different local market conditions. The different payment modules and checkouts the kiosk offers can be used depending on the regional company, with a scale or hand scanner added as an option.

"The SCO has potential and it's chic to boot," Pierre Vieweg, global head of IT technology at Edeka, said in the press release.

The polytouch portal is designed so that every transaction can be processed in seconds, which increases the efficiency of the payment process. Edeka chose a cashless variant with a contactless payment function.

The self-checkout kiosks are already in use at three (Northern Bavaria-Saxony-Thuringia, Southern Bavaria and Minden-Hanover) of the seven regional companies, with more to follow by the end of the year.

The two companies have partnered since 2017, with several hundred service terminals now in use in Edeka stores across all regions.
