HEB grocery chain unveils LEED-certified store design

July 29, 2013

The H.E.B. Grocery Co. opened its newest store in Austin, Texas, last week, boasting an eco-friendly design and the chain's first in-store restaurant, according to Supermarket News.

The 75,000 square-foot H-E-B at Mueller store is registered for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification and Austin Energy Green Building certification.

Features of the sustainable design include low-flow toilets and faucets, refrigerated cases with shaded doors, computer-adjusted LED lighting, reflective roofing material, and solar panels. As a nod to green-traveling shoppers, the store also offers covered bicycle parking. The in-store restaurant, Café Mueller, features chef-made meals, rare wines and an array of tap beers, the article reported.
