Holiday shoppers were out last weekend, but stuck to lists

December 15, 2009

AP reportsthat many holiday shoppers were out last weekend spending money, but many stuck to pre-made lists. Many said they were holding out for bigger discounts closer to Christmas.

And retailers are said to be providing more deals this weekend, according to NPD analyst Marshal Cohen.

Cohen told AP:
This weekend is the last weekend for retailers to try to get whatever they could. Now it's the consumer's turn. Every retailer will pick a different day this week to deepen the discounts. Fifty percent off will be the starting point, and it will go up to 60 percent and 75 percent off within the store.
Cohen is expecting shoppers to spend a little more this year than they did last year. Thus far, Electronics and cold-weather clothing like sweaters and scarves are among the most popular sellers, he told AP.
