Ikea plans to spend $3.16 billion on city-center stores and using existing big box locations as distribution hubs to support e-commerce orders.
The goal, according to a Wall Street Journal report, is to make the retailer and its goods more accessible to consumers. It plans to modify 30% to 40% of its stores to include parcel distribution centers.
"It's all about creating a dual role for our stores," Tolga Öncü, Ingka Holding BV retail operations manager, told the news outlet. Ingka Holding BV is the largest owner and operator of Ikea locations.
The retailer also aims to open more city-center stores and invest in last-mile delivery services.
