IKEA has stepped up its augmented reality game with the latest round of AR features embedded in its 2014 catalog — cementing the retailer's place at the forefront of practical AR applications. The most recent twist to the technology allows shoppers to actually see how items will look inside their homes before they buy them.
According to a post on Mashable, users first set the catalog in a spot where potential items would be placed, then scan the catalog with the AR app on a tablet or smartphone and select the desired item. The app then projects the item into the user's home by layering it over a real-time view captured through the device's camera, enabling users to scale the objects to the room and see how they would fit within the space.
