Indiana jail deploys video kiosks for visitors

The Allen County, Indiana Jail has introduced 10 kiosks equipped with video communication to allow visitors to communicate with inmates, allowing the jail to expand visiting hours, according to the Journal Gazette. The kiosks are similar to Skype, according to John Wiese of the sheriff’s department.

Inmates are now limited to three 25-minute sessions per day. Visiting hours have expanded from a few hours on certain evenings to 8 a.m. to noon and 3 to 8 p.m. daily. Visitors can use the on-site service free once a week, while additional visits cost $10. The same charges apply to visitors using their personal devices to access the service, Wiese said.

GTL, a Virginia company that provides prison communication systems, provided the system.
