Jewelry, outings top Mother's Day gift list

May 9, 2018

Just over one third of Mother's Day shoppers, 34 percent, will spend $4.6 billion on jewelry for moms and 55 percent will spend $4.4 billion on food experiences — such as brunch or dinner.

Flowers, which many may think top the Mother's Day gift list, doesn't boast the most spend but will be bought by 69 percent of consumers, according to a National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics survey.

Just about $2.5 billion will be spent on gift cards (by 45 percent of shoppers), and $1.8 billion on personal services such as a spa day (by 24 percent of consumers).

The survey revealed 29 percent of moms want to receive a "gift of experience" such as a spa day, tickets to a concert or gym membership.

"Mother's Day continues to be a holiday close to the heart of many Americans and this year is no different," Prosper Insights Executive Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said in the release. "Those between 35 and 44 years old are planning to spend the most this season, while younger consumers are the most likely to put their online shopping skills to good use to find inspiration for the perfect gift for mom."

The survey polled 7,520 consumers about Mother's Day plans.
