According to the Lancaster Eagle Gazette, the Kroger Co. is expanding its fuel discount program, in which regular shoppers can get up to a $1-per-gallon discount on a tank of gas.
The discount program rolled out in markets such as Atlanta and Phoenix in time for Memorial Day weekend traveling. According to company officials, the discount is a way to boost sales.
Several Ohio Kroger stores are already offering the $1-a-gallon discount, and all Ohio Kroger stores are expected to offer it by mid-June, said Keith Dailey, corporate communications director for Kroger.
"Especially with gas prices taking a bigger chunk out of household budgets, our customers appreciate being able to save where they can," said Kroger president Rodney McMullen in a company statement.
In a recent regulatory filing, Kroger reported that its revenue from fuel sales rose 37 percent in 2010, to more than $9.1 billion or nearly 12 percent of the company's total revenue.
