If you think grandma really loved that sweater or Dad was truly happy about the new slippers, think again.
They likely both weren't thrilled and just lied about being happy about the gifts, reveals a new survey from Groupon which surveyed 2,000 consumers on reactions related to holiday gifts.
Nearly 73 percent admit they faked their response (happiness) in opening a gift this past holiday season, according to a press release on the survey results. Eight out of 10 consumers will lie and pretend to like a gift even when they hate it.
The insight, according to Groupon, illustrates that a bit more thought needs to go into gift giving, especially by those shopping at the last minute.
"No one wants to give someone a bad gift this holiday season — and based on our research — they may never even know it if they do," Silvija Martincevic, VP and general manager of health, beauty and wellness at Groupon, stated in the release. "The good news is that people aren't looking for something overly complicated to make themselves happy, but rather something that speaks to their personality, involves one of their favorite hobbies or has sentimental value."
The survey also reveals it takes just five seconds for a gift recipient to know if they like a present. Women, stated the release, are "bigger fakers" than men and are nearly twice as likely to express displeasure but senior citizens are even likely the biggest fakers.
