No more pennies at Vermont retailer

September 17, 2012

Power Play Sports, a sporting goods shop in Morrisville, Vt., has banned customer usage of the penny, according to an article on abcNEWS.com.

The store's owner, Caleb Magoon, stopped distributing pennies when giving change. Although the store will still accept the "outdated, outmoded, overpriced nuisance of coinage" from customers, "we’re not actively using them," said Magoon in the article.

Rather than use the penny, the store will round up to the nearest nickel, in the customer's favor. Power Play Sports joins the ranks of the Canadian government and U.S. military bases in Europe, both of which have stopped using the penny as a form of currency.
