The COVID-19 pandemic is prompting the elimination of a longstanding tradition this holiday season — the opportunity to sit on Santa's lap at Macy's.
Santa will not be at any of the retailer's locations for the first time in the 159 years, according to a press release. Instead Santa is going digital.
"To replicate the magical experience of visiting Macy's Santaland for children and their families, we will shift to a virtual engagement this year," Susan Tercero, Macy's vice president, branded entertainment, said in the release. The virtual experience will be available from Nov. 27-Dec. 24.
