Since Redbox's chapter 7 bankruptcy filing, more and more major retailers are grappling with what to do with the abandoned kiosks. Walgreens, for example, filed a court motion in August seeking the right to remove the kiosks from their storefronts, according to a Media Play News report.

Walgreens claimed in the filing that the DVD/Blu-ray dispensers cost the pharmacy chain $184,000 a month in electricity to power all 5,400 kiosks on Walgreens property.

Kiosk removal will cost upwards of $500 per unit, according to the news report. Some, however, think the units might fare well as collectors items, while others remain skeptical.

Brian Rady, former VP of finance at Redbox, told the news outlet it's possible the kiosks will become collectors items.

"I suspect big [Redbox] partners like Walmart and Walgreens will focus on proper disposal, so likely an easy way to get a kiosk from them," Rady said in an email to Media Play News.
