Although Kroger's fiscal third-quarter net income slipped 2 percent, the performance beat analysts' expectations and raised its full-year earnings forecast. Like many grocers, Kroger has been dealing with rising costs. The Cincinnati-based company has been passing along higher prices to consumers to offset rising costs and increased supplier prices for meat, produce, and other goods. The nation's largest grocery chain was recently named America's Most Generous Company in a Chronicle of Philanthropy listing in Forbes magazine. Kroger contributed 10.9 percent of its $589 million pre-tax profits ($64 million) to charity in 2009, the year Chronicle of Philanthropy used to make its evaluations.
