Retail Top 100 2012, No. 96: AutoZone

Auto parts chain AutoZone has the right business model at the right time. As consumers tighten their budgets, they've been extending the use of their cars and delaying plans to buy new ones. As a result, the median age of vehicles on the road has extended to more than seven years (as compared to about five in 2003). With new vehicle sales trending at a 13.6-million-per-year pace, as of November 2011, AutoZone has benefited from an increased demand for parts and acces-sories for used cars. AutoZone, which stocks a wide assortment of replacement hard parts, maintenance items, and accessories has also benefited from declines in gas prices that have encouraged an increase in driving.
