Retailers phasing out paper receipts

December 27, 2011

Receipts are going digital as more retailers offer to skip paper and email shoppers receipts, according to Consumer Watchdog Michael Finney.

The trend took off at Apple retail stores, he points out, and many retailers such as Nordstrom Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and Urban Outfitters are following its lead.

"It's an opportunity for the retailer to hook the customer to get them to either come back for another purchase or go to the website," Seamless Receipts CEO Keith Cowing told Finney.

Cowing's company makes the software for paperless receipts, which allows shoppers to organize their records while giving retailers a new way to reach customers, Cowing said.

He also said 30-50 percent of customers say yes when offered the emails.
