Self-checkout options are increasingly favored by shoppers, with 77% citing speed as the primary driver, according to survey conducted by NCR Voyix.
The survey, which examined consumer behavior across various sectors including grocery, fuel convenience and restaurants, revealed shorter wait times and the ability to independently bag groceries also contribute to the growing preference for self-service checkouts. Notably, younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, demonstrated a higher propensity for self-checkout usage, with 63% of Gen Z and 45% of millennials expressing a preference for this method, according to a press release on the findings.
The survey also highlighted the evolving role of technology within the retail landscape. Grocery stores are increasingly implementing solutions such as cameras to detect missed scans and smart carts that eliminate the need for manual barcode scanning. As consumers navigate rising prices, loyalty programs and personalized offers are gaining significance in retaining customer loyalty.
The findings suggest a growing demand for convenient and personalized shopping experiences, with consumers demonstrating an increasing openness to embracing technologies that streamline their interactions with businesses.
