Survey: Shoppers still careful about spending

August 23, 2012

A survey done by RetailMeNot.com, an online coupon site, found that more than seven in 10 consumers (71 percent) have a dismal view of the economy, and one in four are worried about being able to make all the necessary purchases in the coming months. Only 3 percent of consumer respondents felt that the economy is in "good shape," according to the study that polled more than 1,000 adults.

The survey also predicted shopping behavior for the holiday season, finding that 59 percent of consumers still prefer to conduct their holiday shopping in-store vs. online and that 39 percent start holiday shopping before November.

Other findings included that:

  • 23 percent of respondents start shopping in early November.
  • 12 percent wait to start shopping until Black Friday/Cyber Monday and only 15 percent wait until after Cyber Monday to begin shopping.
  • 54 percent of respondents finish their holiday shopping sometime between Black Friday and when they actually give away the gift during the holidays.
