T-Mobile has introduced True Name by Mastercard for T-Mobile Money which enables customers to display their chosen name on their debit cards. The company built this service to help transgender and non-binary Americans display their chosen names on their cards, according to a press release.

In most cases, transgender Americans find changing their name on bank cards difficult, as they usually have to pay money to legally change their names and then manually update all their personal IDs and documents. With this service, customers can go to settings, toggle on True Name and add their chosen name.

"Adding True Name to T-Mobile Money is a simple yet incredibly impactful shift that gives customers who want to show their true self the ability to do just that — and a natural extension of T-Mobile's belief that everyone deserves to feel included, valued and empowered," Jon Freier, president, consumer group, T-Mobile, said in the release. "Nearly a third of people who have shown an ID with a name that did not match their gender identity have been denied service or had other negative experiences. That shouldn't happen and this new option will ensure customers don't face those same challenges when using their debit card."
