U.S. retail market up 2 percent in the first quarter of 2014

The U.S. retail market increased 2.28 percent year over year in Q1 2014, totaling $1.08 trillion for the quarter, according to projections from eMarketer. For all of 2014, U.S. retail sales will rise 4.4 percent to reach $4.74 trillion in 2014, eMarketer estimates, while retail e-commerce sales in the U.S. will total $304.1 billion this year, accounting for 6.4 percent of total U.S. retail sales. U.S. retail e-commerce sales will continue to increase at a double-digit pace through 2018, eMarketer projects, when e-commerce will reach 8.9 percent of total retail sales.

Target's average sales per store totaled $38.29 million in 2013, according to eMarketer, decreasing 3.7 percent from 2012. Those revenues represented $288 in sales per square foot of retail space across the retailer's portfolio. E-commerce sales for Target increased 15.0 percent to reach $1.76 billion in 2013, accounting for 2.4 percent of the company's total revenue.

TJX Companies totaled an average of $8.7 million in sales per store across its portfolio of brands over the trailing 12 months, representing 0.6 percent growth year over year. Sales per square foot averaged $300 across TJX stores, increasing 4.0 percent over the previoU.S. year.

Home Depot averaged $33.67 million in sales per store in 2013, an increase of 4.2 percent over 2013. Home Depot's sales per square foot were up 4.3 percent in 2013 year over year, totaling $324. E-commerce sales for Home Depot increased 53.1 percent to reach $2.76 billion in 2013, accounting for 3.5 percent of the company's total revenue.

Staples' average sales per store fell 5.8 percent in 2013 to $4.76 million. The company's sales per square foot also dropped in 2013, falling 4.5 percent to hit $235, down from $246 in 2012. E-commerce sales for Staples increased 2.7 percent to reach $2.2 billion in 2013, accounting for 9.7 percent of the company's total revenue.

Dick's Sporting Goods averaged $9.28 million in sales per store in 2013, down 3.1 percent from 2012. Sales per square foot for the brand also fell in 2013, dropping 3.3 percent to hit $188. Meanwhile, e-commerce sales for Dick's increased 55.1 percent to reach $490.8 million in 2013, accounting for 7.9 percent of the company's total revenue.

HHGregg's average sales per store decreased 9.8 percent in the trailing 12 months, falling to $10.32 million. Average sales per square foot at the company's stores fell 8.9 percent in the trailing 12 months to hit $322, down from $344 for all of 2013. E-commerce sales for HHGregg increased 37.5 percent to reach $45.2 million year over year, accounting for 1.9 percent of the company's total revenue.
