Verizon Communications Inc. will increase the minimum wage for new and existing retail, customer service and internal sales staff to $20 an hour.

The carrier is also planning to offer a sign-on bonus for retail specialist and assistant manager positions.

The U.S. wireless telecom said the wage hike was in response to a tight labor pool and increasing inflation, according to a Reuters report.

The news comes on the heels of an increasing number of retailers raising the minimum wage to both entice new workers and lure in those who left jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Target is one retailer that boosted minimum pay in March, from $15 to $24 an hour.

"These changes are the direct result of employee feedback and will help us remain an attractive employer in this competitive environment," Krista Bourne, Verizon Consumer Group COO, told the news outlet.
