According to NYTimes.com, Walgreens has announced that it plans to buy Drugstore.com for $409 million. Drugstore.com sells over-the-counter health, beauty, vision and skin care products.
Drugstore.com, launched in 1999 and employing about 1,000 people, had $456 million in sales last year, while Walgreens had $67 billion. Walgreens has about 7,600 stores throughout the U.S.
“Drugstore.com significantly accelerates our multichannel initiatives by expanding our product selection for our customers,” said Sona Chawla, president of e-commerce for Walgreens.
The acquisition is expected to be finalized in June.
