Walmart expanding grocery delivery across the country

March 14, 2018

In the latest shot fired in the battle to provide greater delivery options, Walmart plans to expand its online grocery delivery to more than 40 percent of the U.S. by 2019.

Right now, the service is available in six markets and will be in place in more than 100 metro markets, from the east coast to the west coast, by the end of the year.

"We're saving customers time by leveraging new technology, and connecting all the parts of our business into a single seamless shopping experience: great stores, easy pickup, fast delivery, and apps and websites that are simple to use," Greg Foran, president and CEO, Walmart U.S., said in a press release issued Wednesday. "We're serving our customers in ways that no one else can. Using our size and scale, we’re bringing the best of Walmart to customers across the country."

According to the release, Walmart has more than 18,000 personal shoppers in the program and plans to add thousands more this year. These associates must complete a three-week training program learning how to select the freshest produce and the best cuts of meat for online grocery customers, stated the release.

Walmart's online grocery delivery carries a $9.95 fee and a $30 minimum order and does not require a subscription.
