Retail giant Walmart is trying to get a head start on the competition by beginning its aggressive holiday marketing today, according to a report from the Denver Post.
The campaign consists of seven early deals on specific big-ticket items, such as televisions and tablet computers.
As we pointed out last month, this year's holiday season is unusually short — 26 shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, down from 32 last year. The double-whammy of Hanukkah falling on Thanksgiving (which is truly unusual, not happening again until the year 79,811) and Christmas falling on a Wednesday all add to a heightened sense of anxiety about retail sales this season.
As the article notes, Walmart isn't the only retailer taking unusual steps in advance of all those challenges: For the first time, JC Penney and Macy's plan to be open on Thanksgiving Day.
