Walmart plans to open ‘Express’ stores across the country

March 20, 2011

According to Twice.com, Walmart is planning to open Walmart Express stores across the country, possibly totaling in the hundreds.

The 15,000-square-foot Express stores are slated to open in both rural and urban areas, including Chicago, New York, San Diego and Washington DC. Construction on the first location in Bentonville, Ark., the retailier's headquarters city, has already begun.

“The aim here, folks, is to get the right model so that we can rapidly roll these things out,” said Bill Simon, president and CEO. “At our peak we built about 350 supercenters in a year, so when we get this thing right, these are going to come real fast, and we’re real excited about this format.”

The smaller stores will be customized to the local markets, while also relying on the chain’s multi-channel capabilities.
