In a move to gain ground against its Web rival Amazon, and to position itself as a bona fide technology company, Walmart is setting up a fleet of global technology centers, according to a blog on MarketWatch.
In the past 18 months, Walmart built or expanded three technology centers in San Bruno, Calif., Bangalore and Sao Paulo. In the San Bruno and San Francisco Bay area, a global online commerce unit of 1,500 people will work separately from the corporate home base in Bentonville, Ark.
"Ecom is the next growth engine for Wal-Mart," said Neil Ashe, president and CEO of Walmart's global e-commerce business. "We have global leverage, not just in cost and capital investment, but innovation leverage."
