It might just signal the end of what consumers view as the kick-off to Black Friday, and it might just be for one year, but Walmart won't be open Thanksgiving Day come November.

The mega retailer will close all stores, including its Sam's Club wholesale locations, in order to give employees the holiday off after what's been one of the most challenging years for retailers in decades, according to a New York Post report.

"We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones," John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart US, said in a statement, according to the report.

In a note to its employees Furner attributed the idea to a Texas store supervisor, Kevin Carlyle.

"He recently wrote us and suggested that we close for Thanksgiving during this unusual year, so that our associates could spend the day with their families," Furner said.

Walmart is also doling out extra bonuses this year, spending an extra $428 million on compensation.
