Why Amazon is adding 'inc' to domain name

May 7, 2019

Inc domains are launching Tuesday for general availability and that means any business and individual around the world may have access to a domain ending that literally means business, according to a press release from www.get.inc.

More than 20 percent of the Fortune US 100 Companies and Forbes 100 World's Most Valuable Brands have already registered .inc domains. If it's good enough for Amazon.inc, Facebook.inc, LinkedIn.inc, Twitter.inc, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, why shouldn't fast casuals give it a try?

Freshii, a Canadian-based fast casual brand, is already on board. It's using Freshii.inc as its corporate site, which was previously ir.freshii.com.

"We are using Freshii.inc for our investor relations page because .inc means business and this is where our corporate content lives online," Paul Hughes, chief business development officer, said in the release. "We can see this becoming the trend for many more public companies moving forward."

A way for start-ups and small businesses to stand out

In the United States, more than 900,000 businesses are incorporated every year. With this massive movement in the marketplace, it can be difficult for individual entrepreneurs to find the domain that matches their new business endeavor perfectly.

With extensive naming options available with .inc, including one- and two-character domains, .inc gives companies the opportunity to take full control of their business name and domain name without compromising on either, according to the release.

"The great thing about a .inc domain name is that when a customer sees it, they'll know they are headed to a business website. GoDaddy is focused on providing our customers with online solutions, and everyday entrepreneurs will find great options with .inc," said GoDaddy Vice President of Product Marketing Paul Bindel in the release. "Where .inc gets really interesting is in its included services. In addition to a great name, businesses get valuable services to complete their online presence."

Other benefits

Every .inc domain comes with more than $2,500 in free member benefits from industry leading brands like WeWork, Square, Intuit, Google Ads, Delta Air Lines and more, providing small businesses with the toolkit they need to succeed, according to the release. Participating retailers, such as GoDaddy and Name.com, are also including their own free .inc benefits like Microsoft Office 365 and Google G Suite for their respective customers.

As a premium domain ending, all .inc domains, including single-letters and single-numbers, can be registered for a flat fee of $1,999. This price point ensures that cybersquatters won't buy the best domains and allows businesses to register the first .inc domain they search for — even if that search is completed five to 10 years from now, according to the link.

Businesses may register .inc domains at www.get.inc or by visiting authorized retailers like GoDaddy, Namecheap, Name.com and Gandi.
