Amazon, in the space of four months, is laying off 27,000 workers in total, given an additional 9,000 announced today.
The news, reported by the New York Times, comes on the heels of Amazon announcing it was closing eight of its Amazon Go stores.
In November, 2022 the retail giant announced it was laying off 10,000 workers, about 3% of its workforce. The layoff was the biggest to date for Amazon.
Then, two months later, in January 2023, it announced it was expanding the layoff to 18,000.
The latest layoff round was announced by CEO Andy Jassy in a note to employees and involves trimming its cloud computing division and advertising, according to The New York Times.
"The overriding tenet of our annual planning this year was to be leaner while doing so in a way that enables us to still invest robustly in the key long-term customer experiences that we believe can meaningfully improve customers' lives and Amazon as a whole," Jassy wrote.
