Amazon has bought a robot technology player, D. Cloostermans-Huwaert NV, as part of its strategy to automate its logistics network.
The Belgian company will become part of the retailer's Amazon Robotics division which was initiated in 2012, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The technology manages robot movement in warehouses and deal terms were not made public. Amazon has been using the technology since 2019 for moving and stacking pallets as well as product packing, according to the WSJ.
The news comes on the heels of Amazon announcing it was pulling back on hiring.
Autonomous mobile robots are gaining traction in a wide range of industrial operations applications given the opportunity for higher efficiencies and lower costs. The AMRs are smarter and more adaptable than automated guided vehicles and are becoming an "essential" choice, according to Kiran Raj, practice head of disruptive tech at GlobalData.
