Amazon not the only retailer holding big sales in October

Amazon's Prime Day sales extravaganza, taking place Oct 13-14, now has some strong competition for luring shoppers.

Target is planning to hold Target Deal Days on the same dates and Walmart is even doing one sales move better —running a Big Save Event from Oct. 11 to Oct. 15, according to press releases from the retailers.

Given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year's back to school shopping season was not quite as compelling revenue-wise given social distancing requirements and a rocky economy that likely has many consumers watching their spend.

So the holiday season is one retailers hope will put them back on a steady sales path and industry watchers are expecting 'Black Friday' sales will start happening well before the day after Thanksgiving.

The big sales push will be mostly online as even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend online shopping rather than in-store shopping on Black Friday and during the busy holiday season due to a higher exposure risk for contracting COVID-19.
