Electronics retailer Best Buy and Home Depot, a home improvement retailer, are both striving to stop in-store theft by locking up more items.

The retailers are securing high-end products in secured areas, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Shoppers wanting secured items need the help of a store associate.

"It's a triage-type scenario. It's stop the bleeding and give yourself some time," Scott Glenn, vice president of asset protection at Home Depot, told the Journal.

The news comes on the heels of Wegmans supermarket chain shuttering a "scan and shop" app due to theft.

Product theft hit nearly $70 billion in 2019 according to the WSJ report, citing data from the Retail Industry Leaders Association.
