Dollar General intends to open more than 1,000 stores this year and expand its in-store brand, called Popshelf, which targets a higher-income customer base.

It also will remodel 1,750 stores and relocate 100 other stores, according to a CNBC report.

The news comes as retailers are struggling to rebound after COVID-19 shuttered many stores for months and are seeing lower consumer store traffic due to the pandemic. Dollar General launched Popshelf in the fall of 2020 as a brand within the Dollar General locations. The retailer aims to have 50 Popshelf 'locations' by end of its fiscal year.

In an earnings call last week Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos said the expansion strategy will increase sales and profit

"Overall, our real estate pipeline remains robust and we are excited about the significant new store opportunities ahead," Chief Operating Officer Jeff Owen said in the call, according to CNBC.
