Hy-Vee grocery stores in Springfield, Missouri, are removing self-checkout lanes in favor of staffed express lanes with cashiers, according to a Springfield News-Leader report. The company said the change aims to improve customer experience by bringing back face-to-face interaction with employees.
"At Hy-Vee, we want to provide a better customer experience in several of our stores by bringing back the face-to-face interaction with our employees that we had pre-COVID," Nola Aigner Davis, senior communications manager, told the news outlet.
Hy-Vee implemented self-checkout lanes in 2019 and expanded them during the pandemic. However, the company has been phasing out these options in recent months. This follows a similar trend by other major retailers like Target, which limited self-checkout purchases to 10 items or less earlier in 2024.
