In-store map apps lead customers to purchases

August 29, 2012

Big-box retailers are trying to simplify the shopping hunt by helping customers locate items in-store with the use of navigation and inventory maps via a mobile application, according to an article on usatoday.com.

Retailers like Walmart, Home Depot and Walgreens have begun utilizing smartphones as a tool to lead customers to their in-store destinations. With 20 percent of retail sales lost when a customer cannot find items, the map app will improve sales and customer satisfaction, the article said.

Walmart head of mobile and digital Gibu Thomas explained that while in a store, "I can talk to an associate, but I can’t search for two-sided tape. Mobile brings the online store to the store."
