Chinese ecommerce player JD.com is opening the first of what will be a chain of high-tech supermarkets in Beijing.
A Bloomberg report stated the strategy is JD.com's move to battle Alibaba Group Holding in the physical retail segment.
The stores, called 7Fresh, will provide shoppers with a mobile app and digital payment. JD, according to Bloomberg, is Walmart’s China-based partner.
Bloomberg, citing a China Daily report, noted that Alibaba is planning to open 30 Hema supermarkets in Beijing this year.
