Kohl's prepping new small format stores, another fulfillment center

August 30, 2017

The third quarter will be a busy one for Kohl's, which plans to expand its retail footprint and ecommerce fulfillment network by opening four small format stores and its fifth fulfillment center.

"Our stores remain at the core of our omnichannel strategy, and we will continue to invest in them by opening smaller formats, rightsizing and optimizing our selling space and working to ensure that shopping in our stores is an engaging and inspiring experience for our customers," said Kevin Mansell, Kohl's chairman, CEO and president, in a press release. "We have set a goal to be the best-in-class omnichannel retailer, and opening our fifth e-commerce distribution center will support the delivery of online orders faster and more efficiently to customers nationwide."

Kohl's operates more than 1,100 stores in 49 states. Shipping from the fifth ecommerce fulfillment center, based in Plainfield, Indiana, will begin his month. The 937,000-square-foot facility will be dedicated to processing, filling and shipping Kohls.com orders.

The new four 35,000-square-foot stores bring the retailer's total of small format locations opened in 2016 to eight. The new stores will be located in the following cities:

  •     North Smithfield, Rhode Island
  •     Blue Ash, Ohio
  •     East Windsor, New Jersey
  •     Montebello, California
