The biggest U.S. mall is closing on Thanksgiving for the first time ever, though the 500-plus retail stores housed inside have the option to remain open on the holiday.
The closing by Mall of America is aimed at providing 1,200 mall employees the day off, according to a Time report, citing a Star Tribune article. The Minnesota-based retail location has been open on the holiday in past years, but if its shops close this year, it will be a holiday off for 13,000 workers.
"We've been talking about this for months, looking at the numbers, looking at the pros and the cons," Jill Renslow, the mall’s senior VP of marketing and business development, told the Tribune. "We're excited to give this day back to our employees so they can celebrate with their families."
