Many retailers getting hit by cyberattacks twice a week

Cyber attacks on retailers are averaging twice a week, with 16 percent of retailers reporting an attack or attempted attack every day.

The data from Zynstra, an IT software provider, reveals 11 percent of retailers are seeing an attack incident two to three times a week and 64 percent said cyber attacks are happening monthly, according to a press release.

The hardest hit retail segment is the grocery store sector, with sports and outdoor retailers following right behind.

The survey, conducted by independent survey consultants Censuswide on behalf of Zynstra, polled 300 IT professionals and c-level executives in the retail sector in the U.K. and the U.S.

"Taking care of a distributed branch network, from a maintenance and security point of view, can be extremely challenging," said Nick East, CEO, Zynstra, in the release. “Looking at the high number of cyber attacks and attempted attacks shines light on the ongoing battles that retail IT is facing in terms of workload, particularly when it comes to security basics like patching and performing updates.”

Yet despite the startling attack figures, just 33 percent of retailers believe their network is secure.
