Morrisons, a U.K. grocer, is partnering with Instacart to deliver Caper Carts to its grocery aisles, marking Instacart's first retail collaboration to deploy the technology in the U.K.
The Caper Carts will be available starting in early 2026 at a single Morrisons store, with the potential for a wider rollout in the future, according to a press release.
The carts are designed to enhance the in-store shopping experience by allowing customers to scan items as they shop, track their running total and check out without the need for a cashier. The carts feature interactive screens, built-in scales for weighing produce and AI-powered sensors.
The smart carts will integrate with the Morrisons More Card loyalty program to provide customers with added savings and convenience.
"Shopping is no longer solely online or in-store — it's a hybrid of both — and Caper Carts offer a seamless way to combine the convenience and personalization of e-commerce with the inspiration and discovery that happens in physical stores," David McIntosh, chief connected stores officer at Instacart, said in the release.
Instacart's Caper Carts are part of the company's Connected Stores suite and are deployed in nearly 100 cities across 15 states in North America.
