Most consumers not big IoT fans, reveals new survey

Those using home Internet of Things technology are eager for more but the majority of consumers aren't big on IoT just yet.

While a good majority of consumers are skeptical about the Internet of Things technologies coming into play, those who are using IoT-enabled services are interested in the products and likely to use home IoT applications.

A new IDC survey reveals consumers want a higher value proposition when it comes to home-based IoT technology, and are wary of cost and use.

The research states 28 percent of those owning a home network stream online videos and one out of five using home automation, monitoring and control tools noted a home IoT capability solved a problem they weren’t aware of.

"The long-run impact of the Internet of Things will be broader and deeper than we imagine right now, but the industry is still in the early stages of developing the vision and conveying it to consumers," said Jonathan Gaw, research manager for IDC's Internet of Things: Consumer program.

The survey polled 1,500 U.S. adults who subscribe to broadband Internet service at home.
