A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Publix Super Markets in a Miami federal court, alleging the company's self-checkout systems systematically overcharge customers, according to a Wide Open Country report.
Plaintiff Wendy Koutouzis claims the self-checkout scales inflate the weight of items sold by weight, such as meats and cheeses, resulting in higher prices. The lawsuit cites specific instances where purchased items were allegedly charged at a significantly higher price than their actual weight and advertised sale price would indicate.
The suit further alleges this overcharging occurs particularly during weekly discount periods on produce sold by weight, where the point-of-sale system fails to apply the discount, instead charging the original, non-discounted price based on an inflated weight. The lawsuit seeks compensation for all affected Publix customers across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The plaintiff's legal team is seeking to include other customers with evidence of overcharging in the class-action suit. In addition to monetary compensation, the suit demands that Publix cease the alleged overcharging practices and cover legal fees and expenses. Publix has not yet issued a public statement regarding the lawsuit.
