Report: Amazon wants Amazon Pay to be next Apple Pay

November 23, 2018

Amazon is making a push to get Amazon Pay digital wallet into brick-and-mortar retailers, restaurants, gas stations and merchants it doesn’t compete against, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The move is an effort to challenge Apple Pay, the dominant mobile wallet in the U.S., and grow its share of a payment market that remains relatively weak domestically compared to widespread use of digital wallets in Asia and other regions, according to the report.

The report does not detail how Amazon Pay would be used at checkout. Top mobile payment leaders, including Apple and Samsung, allow users to scan and pay using a smartphone at checkout. Google Pay is used in combination with phones using the Android OS.

Apple Pay was accepted at about 5 million locations as of May, according to the report. In Asia, Alipay and WeChat Pay are the leading mobile payment apps.

An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on the report stating it is rumor and speculation.
