Researchers at Kneron, an artificial-intelligence provider, said they fooled facial recognition systems using a printed mask showing a different person's face, according to a Business Insider report. They said a person who prints a lifelike mask resembling another person could bypass security checkpoints.

The researchers tested systems across three continents, and claimed they fooled Alipay and WeChat payment tablets, in addition to a Chinese border checkpoint.

A printed mask also fooled facial recognition at a passport control gate at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, they said.

Some facial-recognition software proved impervious to the printed mask, however. Apple's Face ID and Huawei's system were not fooled by the printed mask. Both systems use structured light imaging.

The researchers also said the Kneron facial recognition software was not fooled by the printed mask.

The tests were carried out with the permission of security guards at checkpoints. Having humans present to notice the mask will ensure the checkpoints are not unsecured, the researchers said.
